ALL DONATIONS DOUBLED 22–29 June
“Working in the garden helps me feel calm and safe. I’m earning something, learning and I don’t feel alone any more.”
22-29 June | Every donation doubled.
During lockdown, Sharifah began putting into practice the urban farming skills she had learned through Awamu before the pandemic.
She started growing vegetables to support herself and her family. But soon, she had more food than she needed. She began selling vegetables locally — and then teaching other young women the skills she had learned too.
Today, her project is becoming something much bigger: a youth-led urban farm creating food, income, mentoring and opportunity for girls and young women in Bwaise, Kampala.
Now we have the chance to help it grow.
22 -28 June: Your donation will be doubled by the People Postcode Lottery.
The People’s Postcode Lottery believes in the potential of this youth-led project too. They’ve pledged £2,750 to help us get it to the next stage.
Now we need to raise £2,750 to unlock all of their matched funding.
That means every donation made through our Big Give campaign page between 22-29 June will be doubled.
Will you help us unlock this funding with a donation?
A youth-led project rooted in the community
Garden of Eden is already providing food and income opportunities for local young people.
With your support, at least 12 girls recovering from violence will access safe work and skills training, benefiting around 80 family members.
A further 60 girls and young women will receive training, seasonal work and support to grow food and earn income through small home-based gardens.
Awamu will work alongside Sharifah and her team to expand the project so girls can access:
Safe work and practical skills training
Mentoring and counselling
Support to grow food and earn income
A supportive network of other young women
The project will also support composting, recycling and community clean-up activities that improve the local environment.
“I left school at 15 because my family had no money. I know what it feels like to lose your chance — that’s why I mentor girls so they don’t lose theirs.”
— Sharifah, founder of Garden of Eden
Awamu' believes some of the strongest solutions come from young women who have lived through these challenges themselves.
By supporting projects started by young people who have come through Awamu’s programmes, we can help grow long-term, community-led solutions rooted in dignity and leadership.
Why this project matters
In Bwaise, Kampala, girls and young women face intersecting challenges including violence, stigma, food insecurity and limited access to safe, paid employment.
Girls escaping abuse are often pushed out of school and excluded from work. Many are cut off from supportive community networks.
Without safe opportunities, many face increasing isolation, exploitation and long-term poverty.
But when girls have safety, support and opportunities, they can rebuild their lives — and help others do the same.
Help grow something bigger
This project started with you investing in one girl’s skills. Now Sharifah is putting those skills into action — creating opportunities for other girls and young women in her community.
Together, we can help it become a safe space where girls can recover, earn an income, support one another and build brighter futures.
Every donation made on our Big Give Campaign page between 22–29 June will be doubled by the People Postcode lottery.
Twice the impact, at no extra cost to you!
