On 24th April 2013, 1133 people were killed and over 2500 were injured when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Social and environmental catastrophes in our fashion supply chains continue. Fashion Revolution Day says enough is enough.
Being part of Fashion Revolution Day will help to raise awareness of the true cost of fashion, show the world that change is possible, and celebrate all those involved in creating a more sustainable future for fashion.
The theme of the second Fashion Revolution Day is ‘Who Made My Clothes’ (and they don’t just mean which brand, they mean who? literally!).
At Awamu every item is labelled with its makers name so you can follow the impact it has on its tailor as well as on the children in their community.
In the photo above is the wonderful Sarah Kabenge making clothes that will give the most vulnerable children in the slums of Kampala access to the education that is vital to their future.
It's not rocket science but it is a fashion revolution. We believe fashion should have a positive impact on peoples lives.
Through our unique model we are helping women and children by giving them the skills they need to transform their future:
Education
- We provide scholarships to the most vulnerable children to ensure they get the education that will increase their skills and life chances.
Skills and enterprise
- We provide work so that women can meet the needs of their families.
- We train mums like Fatuma and vulnerable girls who are heads of households to work together and learn skills that will improve their earning potential and quality of life for themselves and all the children in their care.
- We help give them a helping hand to start their own business and regain control over their lives.
Nutrition and health
- We break down the barriers to learning and improve the health of children by giving guardians the tools and training to build gardens that will provide a source of nutritious, fresh food for their family.
